- Abstract
- The aim of this study is to assess the measures being implemented by the Zimbabwean government to address the challenges faced by Orphans and Vulnerable Children to acquire birth certificates in Marondera District, specifically in Rusike suburb. The objectives of the study were to identify the negative impacts faced by unregistered Orphans and Vulnerable Children in their lives, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the government measures to address the challenges faced by OVC in acquiring birth certificates in Rusike suburb and to identify ways to improve child birth registration in Rusike suburb. Qualitative Research methodology was used in this study thus unstructured interviews and key informant interviews were used as Research methods. The data was presented and analyzed using thematic data analysis. The basic needs approach was used as the theoretical framework. The study revealed that OVCs without birth certificates faces multiple challenges such as less access to social services, social marginalization, human rights violations, psycho-social problems and less access to birth registration. The study showed that the government has put in place various measures to address the challenges being faced by OVCs in acquiring birth registration which includes mobile birth registration, free birth registration, decentralization of birth registration points and removal of birth registration requirements. According to the study the measures by the government has improved the birth registration process but still there are some setbacks that include parents’ reluctance and lack of funding. It emerged that education awareness, proper funding, monitoring and evaluation cab improve child birth registration. The study recommended that child birth registration needs to be ensued at any cost considering the fact that it has become a human right issue lack of birth means double trouble.
