Abstract
This study focused on the socio-economic impacts of artisanal mining a case study of Makaha area ward 15, Mudzi district. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of artisanal mining on society and the economy. The objective of the study was there to analyse how artisanal mining contributes to the socio-economic livelihoods of people, to explore the challenges being faced by artisanal miners in contributing to the socioeconomic development of the area, and to identify measures that help lessen the detrimental effects of artisanal mining. The study was of great importance because it emphasizes the fight against poverty in rural and poor areas like the Makaha area. It can also help policymakers create and implement laws that empower and support miners while protecting the environment. Interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions, and observations were employed by the researcher as techniques for gathering data about artisanal miners in the Makaha area. According to the study, artisanal mining has to be adopted in the economy. The study explored how artisanal mining contributes to the socio-economic livelihoods of people whereby they can pay for their basic social services and enhance their overall quality of life. The study also managed to explore the challenges faced by artisanal miners to contribute to the social and economic development of the area. The researcher also managed to explore the measures to negative impacts imposed through artisanal mining that is the Legislative measures like the (Water Act, Forestry Act, and the EMA Act) as well as the role of traditional leaders in implementing the Act Forestry.
