This research project aimed to explore the factors related to the participation of women in leadership positions. The study was conducted in Mafararikwa Ward 16, Mutare District, Manicaland where there is low participation of women in leadership positions. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through questionnaires and interviews whilst using random sampling. The survey questionnaire assessed the women in the community, on the factors related to the participation of women in leadership positions, determining the level of women participation in leadership positions, factors related to the participation of women in leadership positions and the strategies to improve the factors related to low participation of women in leadership positions. The qualitative interviews provided deeper insights into the reasons behind the factors related to the participation of women in leadership positions. The findings underscored the stark underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, emphasizing the urgency of intervention. Regarding support for aspiring female leaders in Mafararikwa, 20% rate it as excellent, 40% as good, 21% as fair, 19% as poor, and 10% as very poor. Gender-related barriers to leadership are acknowledged by 30% of respondents, while 70% have not encountered such challenges. 50% of the respondents stated that women cannot chair a program since they are not allowed to stand in front of men as it shows bad manners and the people of Johane Marange Apostolic Church do not allow women to participate in leadership positions as they are inferior while men are superior. Gender bias is represented by 60% acknowledging its existence in opportunities for women to attain leadership roles, while 30% do not perceive such bias, and 10% are unsure. The various stakeholders also showed their concerns as their affected by the low participation of women in leadership positions as they would need them in many of their projects to be successful. The other findings were on the strategies to improve women’s participation in leadership positions. The results of the strategies favored, contacting traditional leaders and church leaders trainings, gender equity dialogue with men, an increase in awareness and advocacy for gender equality as well as, developing programs for women offering mentorship and programmers. Various recommendations were laid out which include, convening workshops and training, eliminating stereotypes and societal conventions, and coordinating with relevant organizations. Hence, there are various factors related to the participation of women in leadership positions, in Mafararikwa Ward 16, Mutare District, Manicaland.
