- Abstract
- The research investigates the causes, effects and possible ways of curbing drug and substance abuse in Mvurwi, Ward 1. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used as data gathering techniques which leans more towards qualitative research. The participants were between the ages of 18 and 24. The findings of this study revealed several factors that contributed to drug and substance abuse by the youths. The study revealed that peer pressure, availability and accessibility of drugs and substances, stress and unemployment as the drivers of drug and substance abuse. The study also revealed several negative effects of drug and substance abuse by youths and among them include mental health problems, addiction, physical health problem and risk behavior. Based on the findings the research various ideas were raised so as to curb the problem of drug and substance abuse, and among them include awareness campaigns,brehabilitation centers, early intervention, counseling and therapy and law enforcement. The studybfindings recommended that the government should increase law enforcement efforts to crack down on drug dealers and suppliers in high density suburbs. This could be achieved through patrols and intelligence gathering
