- Abstract
- This research was aimed at assessing impact of technology on crime reduction in the retail sector of Zimbabwe using Bindura Central Business District as a case study. The main objective of the study is to determine how technology influences crime in the retail sector of bandura so as to establish and formulate strategies that can be used by retailers in Bindura to reduce crime. There was review of relevant literature which pointed out that use of technology has been successful in addressing criminal activities to a greater extent. The study adopted descriptive research design in finding the feelings, opinions and perceptions of the participants. To identify the true problems affecting retailers, the research included both qualitative and quantitative research through the use of the interview guide and the questionnaire as part of the study tools, along with judgmental sampling and stratified random sample. Data was collected from 40 individuals, of which 10 participated in interviews and 30 completed questionnaires. Tables, pie charts, and graphs were used to analyze and show the data that was collected. Microsoft Excel was used. The research founded out criminal cases such as burglary and cybercrime are prevalent within the retail sector in Bindura. Reduction of crimes such as burglary and cybercrime have been facilitated by technologies like the use of CCTVs and the installation of firewalls and other software’s that deter hackers such as installation of antivirus .Therefore showing that technology can be used to deter crime in the retail sector as suggested by the literature review where Wells and Farrington used such features to deter crime in their study The research recommended the need to raise awareness campaigns as people continue to be duped by technologically intellect criminals and also through partnership between private and state players should be strengthened in order to ensure effective implementation of policies as well as fostering human rights issues.
