- Abstract
- This study aimed to analyze the long-term effects of COVID-19 on the social and economic lives of Zimbabweans residing in the Harare South zone, Zimbabwe. The specific objectives were to examine the impacts of COVID-19 on the social lives, economic lives, and livelihood recovery of residents. The study was guided by the livelihood vulnerability framework and resilience theory. The research employed a qualitative phenomenological design, using the livelihood vulnerability framework and resilience theory as the theoretical underpinnings. In-depth interviews and open -ended questionnaires were conducted with 30 purposively selected participants from Harare South to gather rich, nuanced data on their lived experiences. Thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns and insights. The findings reveal that while the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted social lives through lockdowns and restrictions, the community demonstrated resilience, with most aspects of social life gradually returning to normalcy. Changes in family dynamics and increased mental health awareness represented positive long-term impacts. Economically, the pandemic led to widespread job losses, employment insecurity, and financial strain, with the informal sector and small business adaptations playing crucial roles in recovery. However, uneven progress and persistent challenges, such as debt burdens and inequalities, underscored the need for inclusive policies. The study concludes that the pandemic experience elucidated both the inherent strengths and systemic vulnerabilities of the community, highlighting the importance of building economic and social safeguards to boost resilience against future shocks. Key recommendations include strengthening community support networks, improving conditions for informal workers and small businesses, and integrating health and economic recovery strategies.
