Abstract
-
This study sought to examine the emergence, use and effectiveness of the CCTV system(s) as crime prevention innovation to deter and prevent crime: shoplifting, theft (other) and fraud against business using Choppies Superstore Zimbabwe, Bindura branch as a representative sample of particularly corporate/retail store-supermarket(s) in Zimbabwe. Closed-Circuit
television (CCTV) is the use of video camera to transmit a signal to a specific or set of monitors (Piza et al, 2015). According to literature, in 1949, the first commercially available CCTV systems were manufactured in America by a US contractor company, Vericon (Pvt) Ltd. The earliest documented use of the CCTV technology was in Germany in 1942 to monitor the launch of V-2 rockets, the world’s first long-range ballistic missiles during World
War II. CCTV system(s) were also used in the United Kingdom during the crowning of Queen Elizabeth 11 also for the objective of enhancing security for the queen and rest of the monarch. According to literature, the debate on CCTV system effectiveness has reached a polarising and an open to doubt standoff. On the one side, several studies and leading thinkers plainly argue that CCTV system is ineffective. On the other hand, various organisations are weekly green-lighting new CCTV projects. In going about this study, quantitative and qualitative methods of collecting data (i.e.) observation, face to face interviews, and questionnaires were used for data collection on a sample of 41 Choppies
Superstore Zimbabwe, Bindura branch employees (i.e.) Operations manager, front floor and till supervisors, till operators, cleaners, butchers, bakers, accounts clerk, IT supervisors, IT technicians and outside stakeholders (i.e.) security guards (outsourced) to help the objective of the study: effectiveness in deterrence, prevention and investigation of incidences and crime against business. In conclusion, dependent on findings, the research is intended to find ways and make recommendations on how CCTV sytems can be fully utilised to enhance security to minimise loss through crimes such as shoplifting, theft by employees and vandalism against
business such as Choppies Superstore Zimbabwe, Bindura Branch, other branches country wide and all retail store chain supermarkets at large.
