- Abstract
- Despite their growing popularity, economic sanctions have received widespread criticism for their low success rate. We address the preceding issue by introducing a framework that capitalizes on sanction diversity. This study has two main objectives: First, investigate the impact of sanctions on the target economy, particularly Zimbabwe. Second, to show that the estimated effect is determined by a set of factors specific to each sanction episode. These factors are divided into two categories: those that determine the sanctioned state's current political and economic conditions and those that focus on specific sanctions characteristics. However, the effect is determined by the sanctioned country's political and economic institutional environment. Developing countries are more sensitive to sanctions than developed ones, while autocracies are more severely affected. Furthermore, specific sanction features such as the type of measures used or the presence of a threat influence their effectiveness. Based on the findings, it is clear that the effective use of sanctions as a foreign policy tool necessitates a thorough investigation that takes into account the unique aspects of each occurrence.
