- Abstract
- The small-scale gold miners in Bindura play a vital role in enhancing rural livelihoods, contributing significantly to the local economy and community development. Despite facing numerous challenges, artisanal mining offers a lifeline for rural dwellers, providing an alternative source of income and employment opportunities. On one hand, small-scale gold mining reduces poverty and improves living standards, enabling rural households to access basic necessities and invest in their future. The income generated also promotes local development, infrastructure growth, and food security. Moreover, artisanal mining empowers rural communities, particularly women and youth, to become economically independent and self-sufficient. On the other hand, small-scale gold mining in Bindura faces challenges such as environmental degradation, health risks, and limited access to markets and technology. To mitigate these issues, it is essential to promote sustainable mining practices, provide training and support, and formalize and regulate the sector. Small-scale gold miners in Bindura are crucial for enhancing rural livelihoods, and their contributions should be recognized and supported. By addressing the challenges and leveraging the opportunities, artisanal mining can continue to play a vital role in promoting sustainable development and poverty reduction in rural Zimbabwe
