- Abstract
- Despite its difficulties, artisanal and small-scale mining has become a vital economic activity and a source of revenue for communities in underdeveloped countries. The goal of the study was to comprehend the difficulties in mitigating the issues related to artisanal mining. Thirty one responders made up the study's sample. The study examined how ASM affected local people, livelihoods, and safety in addition to its effects on the environment, including pollution, soil erosion, and deforestation. The data that was gathered was subjected to qualitative analysis. Information was gathered through 8 key informant interviews, 3 FGDs, and observations. The majority of responders were aware of the difficulties in reducing artisanal mining related issues or problems. The study's findings highlighted that corruption affects every industry. The main factor contributing to land degradation is the bribery of environmental authorities by these artisanal miners, who want permits to operate at the expense of the ecosystem. Through various channels, including programs that create jobs and generate revenue, the government has also stepped in to help reduce the issues related to artisanal mining. These are supplementing their incomes remarkably thereby improving their standards of living and reducing ASM problems. Additionally, the study's findings can influence the development of tactics and laws that address artisanal mining-related problems in a more equitable and efficient manner. In order to lessen reliance on illicit mining activities, the research recommends regulating artisanal mining activities by passing and enforcing stringent laws governing labor practices, environmental standards, and license requirements. It also suggests providing opportunities for alternative sources of income.
