- Abstract
- The disaster preparedness in Zimbabwe has not been flourishing in the past decade as evidenced by the impacts of Cyclone Idai of 2019 which has drawn attention for the need to incorporate and appreciate role of culture in disaster management efforts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contribution of cultural diversity to disaster preparedness initiatives, with a particular emphasis on Chadereka, Muzarabani Ward 1. Understanding the connections between cultural variety and disaster preparedness was the study's main goal, which expanded out into other goals. These included the disasters that have affected the area, its cultural attributes, their role in disaster preparedness and the ways to strengthen the use of culture to enhance disaster preparedness. The study recognized the different cultures in Chadereka and how they have impacted disaster preparedness in the area. The study targeted traditional leaders, local people and NGO’s in the area which were purposively selected. The Scientific Package for Social Sciences was utilized for the analysis of the gathered data. The study saw that Chadereka was a culturally rooted community as they use the traditional hierarchy of communication whereby the local people give their grievances to Musikavanhu through the spirit mediums.it has been found through this research that education, promoting sustainable habitats, integrating shared local values, conservation, unity and cooperation can strengthen the use of culture in enhancing disaster preparedness.
