- Abstract
- This study assesses the impacts of human wildlife conflict on the livelihoods of people in Masoka Ward 11, Mbire District, using a mixed method approach. A survey of 321 households, focus group discussions and key informant and in-depth interviews revealed that human wildlife conflict significantly affects livelihoods, with more than 80% of respondents experiencing crop damage and livestock predation. Correlation analysis revealed a strong positive correlation between economic losses and HWC incidents (0, 743702262), indicating that as HWC incidents increase, economic losses also increase. ANOVA analysis showed significant differences between different age groups (F=4, 565118, p>0, 05) indicating that all age groups are affected and experience economic losses due to HWC. The study findings highlight the importance of addressing HWC to improve livelihoods and promote human wildlife coexistence. The study recommends the implementation of community based conservation and wildlife friendly agriculture practices to mitigate HWC and reduce economic losses. The study’s findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge on HWC and inform effective strategies for promoting human wildlife coexistence in Masoka ward11, Mbire District.
