- Abstract
-
Floods are a recurring natural disaster in Muzarabani, Zimbabwe, with devastating impacts on the community’s livelihood, infrastructure, and overall well-being. This study investigates the response strategies employed by local communities and authorities to mitigate the effects of flooding in Muzarabani. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with residents, local leaders, and officials from disaster management agencies in order to assess community vulnerability and resilience to floods and also identify gaps in existing disaster management policies and practices. The findings reveal that lack of coordination among stake holders, inadequate infrastructure and lack of education and training are major hindrances to response strategies to floods. Recommendations include the enhancement of early warning systems for instance automated weather forecasting and monitoring systems and community radio and television broadcasts, infrastructural development through the establishment of resilient infrastructure, education and training of local people in response to floods. The results of this research aims to inform policymakers and stakeholders to develop more effective flood response strategies, ultimately reducing vulnerability and enhancing community resilience in Muzarabani.
