Firearms accidental discharges by security personnel at SECURICO Security Services

Abstract

Firearms are essential tool of trade or security Aids at Securico Security services operations and the Private Security sector in general, their use acts as deterrent against possible hostile confrontation. The intentional discharge of firearm is highly plausible but the unintentional accidental or negligent discharge of a firearms while on duty might have far reaching consequences to business growth and bad publicity. The researcher carefully chose this subject matter to identify the major cause or rather causes of Firearms accidental discharges at Securico Security services. The target population was 200 and 121 was the sample size. A case study was used a research design A structure questionnaire was used to collect data couple with informal interviews, field observations, records review, and planned job observations. The fishbone or Ishikawa Model was uses to extract primary causes of firearms accidental discharges. Data was collected using a questionnaire and structured interviews, the analysis was executed using plain figures processed by plain excel spread sheet and to a greater extent percentages so that there is easy interpretation. Terms of reference were strongly aligned to SHEQ international standard considering the organization is certified. A trend analysis was tabulated to ascertain progressive occurrences, evaluation of internal controls and easy monitoring and evaluation. The structured analysis revealed that most Firearms accidental discharges are caused by poor ergonomics, inadequate training. Relevant pieces of legislation governing use of firearms are found herein, legal issues and the damage likely to emerge if fire rams are carelessly handled. The research did not factor out accidental discharges occurring during training considering the organization made a strategic decision to use one portal. Recommendations to counter those causes were tabled to mitigate the causes, the scope only focused on Firearms handlers hence the limitation, the area is not heavily reached since it is covered by several pieces of legislation and confidentiality undertaking, the other was ascertaining customer perception about accidental discharges. Future research should focus on the conditions under which accidental discharges are realized, these may be but not limited to response activity, dexterity issues, type of weapons as in double or single action, officer behavior and general ergonomics of obstacle maneuvering.
