THE Impact of Cybercrime on The Retail Sector. A Case of Harare Cental Business District
- Abstract
- Goal of the study was to evaluate how cybercrime affected Harare's central business district. Major retail industry goals of the study were to describe the most prevalent forms of cybercrime, assess their effects, pinpoint their effects, and come up with preventative measures for the retail industry. With a sample size of 80 participants—56 questionnaire responders and 24 interviewees—the researcher employed a descriptive survey study design. Through the use of questionnaires and interviews, information on retail stores operating in the Harare CBD was gathered. Techniques like judgmental sampling and stratified random sample were used. Clothing, footwear, furniture, computers, cellphones, home electrical appliances, and supermarkets were among the retail stores that were chosen. Charts, tables, and bar graphs were used to present the data. The research's conclusions showed that phishing and virus spread were the most common types of cybercrime in the retail industry, while hacking, denial-of-service attacks, and electronic fraud were the least frequent. The survey discovered that most retail businesses had suffered significant financial losses as a result of cybercrime. The primary method for securing networks was thought to be antivirus. One tactic that should be used in the retail sector is awareness campaigns. The researcher came to the conclusion that the retail industry has become more open to cyberattacks due to its embrace of new technologies. The researcher advised store operators to get software from reliable vendors and advised the government to pass legislation that address cybercrime, take into account an overarching security framework, and train their personnel about the hazards associated with it.
