Over the past two decades, Information Communication Technology (ICT) has been widely adopted by retailers and consequently, cybercrimes including phishing, card fraud, and virus dissemination have been fueled in Zimbabwe's retail sector. This research therefore, sought to document the nature and effects of cybercrime in the retail sector, with specific focus on Bindura CBD retail sector. The study was guided by the following objectives: to document the nature of cybercrime in the retail sector in Bindura CBD, to evaluate the effectiveness of current measures against cybercrime in Bindura CBD, to assess the effects of cybercrime on the retail sector in Bindura CBD and to recommend the most effective countermeasures. The researcher used a descriptive case study research design on a sample size of 52 participants with the questionnaire and the interview as the main data collection instruments. Stratified random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to select respondents for the study. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 and Microsoft Excel 2013 were used to analyse data which was then presented using tables and bar graphs. Virus dissemination, hacking and card fraud were identified as the major forms of cybercrime prevalent in the retail sector in Bindura CBD. Direct financial losses, additional security costs and reputational damage were found to be the major impacts posed by cybercrime on retail sector in Bindura CBD. It was also discovered through the research that the current measures to fight cybercrime in the retail sector were less effective. The researcher strongly recommended stiff penalties to errant employees, access control mechanisms, installation of next-generation firewalls, backing up critical data, configuration management and target hardening as effective measures against cybercrime in the retail sector.
