ABSTRACT
The study analysed the roles of ZGC on the attainment of gender equality in Zimbabwe. The major aim of the study was to examine the achievements and challenges faced by the ZGC in their zeal to attain gender equality in Zimbabwe. The study employed a case study research design. The research was qualitative in nature and employed interviews for the purpose of data collection. A sample size of 10 participants was drawn from the target population and was utilised to collect relevant information to the study. The study employed the intersectionality theory. The study indicated that the ZGC was mandated by the Constitution to carry out various roles to attain gender equality and through partaking their roles they managed to have various achievements and challenges in a bid to achieve gender equality in Zimbabwe. The study found out that the ZGC has managed to receive complaints and conduct various investigations to ensure social justice to their clients or survivors, they have conducted various researches on issues related to gender equality, conducted awareness campaigns on gender equality, works towards elimination of all forms of GBV, advocated for gender equality in education, economic and political empowerment, partnership and collaborations and conducting monitoring and evaluation on cases related to gender equality. . The study also discovered various challenges encountered by the ZGC which include, lack of funds, complainants developing cold feet, lack of decentralisation in all country’s provinces and districts, exclusion of PWDs, being gender bias and gaps of the ZGC Act [10:31]. The study also puts across some recommendations. It recommends amendment of gender equality laws and policies for the inclusion of males and PWDs. There is also need for the amendment of the ZGC Act. Conduct more awareness campaigns related to gender equality. Moreover, an affirmative action strategy should be instituted to put a gender balance on staff at ZGC can feel more comfortable when they come to report their cases and so that it may also be clear to the nation that the ZGC preach what they practice as well.
