- Abstract
- The study sought to examine the role of traditional institutions in peacebuilding, focusing on the case of Kaidza village in Mt Darwin. The main research objectives were to investigate the role of traditional leaders in peacebuilding in Zimbabwe rural communities, assess the effectiveness of peacebuilding and conflict transformation mechanisms used by traditional institutions in rural communities and lastly to suggest measures that should be put in place to ensure the success of peacebuilding mechanisms in Zimbabwe. A qualitative methodology was employed in this study. A sample of 30 participants was used for the purpose of this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and documentary review. Based on research findings, in Kaidza village the most prevalent conflicts revolve around land disputes, marriage problems, ownership rights, local disputes, resource distribution issues. The findings of the study show that conflict over land ranges diverse issues. Regarding the role of traditional leaders in these conflicts, the study revealed that they are playing a big role in resolving them. It was noted from the study that issues within the community are discussed and resolved even in an informal gathering in the traditional manner. Mechanisms of resolution of the conflict or antagonistic issues by the Dare ramambos are founded on the traditional values, contextual references and moral codes of conduct.
