- Abstract
- This study explores the contribution of Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to correctional services in reducing recidivism among youthful offenders in Zimbabwe a case study of Bindura Main Prison. Recognising the growing importance of non-state actors in offender rehabilitation, the study addresses a critical gap in localised literature on the effectiveness and sustainability of CBO interventions within correctional systems. Guided by objectives to examine the role of CBOs in rehabilitation and reintegration, assess the sustainability of their initiatives, and identify collaboration challenges with correctional services, the study employed a mixed method approach, using snowball sampling to engage 32 participants through interviews, questionnaires, and focus group discussions. Key findings indicate that while CBOs significantly contribute to rehabilitation through vocational training and psychosocial support, their impact is constrained by funding instability, limited access to prison facilities, and weak institutional collaboration. The study concludes that formalising partnerships and supporting sustainable CBO models are essential for effective reintegration. These findings have practical implications for policy reforms and highlight the need for stronger multi-stakeholder engagement in Zimbabwe’s correctional system.
