Abstract
This study evaluates the effectiveness of ethics in protecting human rights in Zimbabwe's mining industry, with a specific focus on Trojan Nickel Mine. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ethics in human rights protection at Trojan Nickel Mine (TNM) in Bindura. The secondary objectives for the study were to determine the effectiveness of ethics in the protection of human rights at Trojan Nickel Mine, to assess the current state of human rights protection at Trojan Nickel Mine, to identify the factors which affect the effectiveness of ethics in the protection of human rights and to provide recommendations for enhancing human rights protection and ethical standards in the mining industry. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this research combines qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. A survey questionnaire was administered to 100 mine employees and local community members, while in-depth interviews were conducted with 05 key stakeholders, including mine management, union representatives, and local leaders. This study assessed the current state of human rights protection at Trojan Mine, revealing that while the mine has policies in place, implementation gaps and inadequate training hinder effective protection. The effectiveness of ethics in protecting human rights was found to be limited, with ethics often being secondary to operational concerns. Factors affecting the effectiveness of ethics included inadequate training, lack of accountability, and prioritization of profits over people. Based on these findings, this study concludes that ethics are not entirely effective in protecting human rights at Trojan Mine. To enhance human rights protection and ethical standards, it is recommended that Trojan Mine provides regular training on human rights and ethics to employees and establishes an independent accountability mechanism to ensure adherence to human rights policies.
