Abstract
-
This qualitative study explored the socio-economic challenges faced by orphans in Belvedere, Zimbabwe, with a specific focus on St Joseph's House for Boys, a residential care facility providing holistic support services. The research problem emanated from the vulnerability of orphans to poverty, exploitation, and limited access to education, healthcare, and psychosocial support, exacerbating their marginalization and exclusion. Understanding effective intervention strategies is crucial for enhancing their well-being and promoting resilience. Using a qualitative approach, the study combined focus group discussions with questionnaires to gather in-depth insights from orphans and caregivers, highlighting the importance of empowerment and participatory approaches. Findings revealed that vocational training, mentorship programs, and community-based initiatives were essential for enhancing socio-economic prospects, while challenges persisted, including limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and societal stigma. The study concludes that strengths-based interventions, trauma-informed care, and collaborative efforts between organizations and communities are vital for addressing the complex needs of orphans. Recommendations include strengthening vocational training programs, enhancing community engagement, and advocating for policy changes to protect and support vulnerable children, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on supporting orphans and provides actionable insights for social workers, policymakers, and stakeholders working to improve their lives.
