Abstract
-
The rapid proliferation of sports betting in Zimbabwe, particularly among university students, has raised significant concerns about its adverse effects on mental health, academic performance, and financial stability. This study explores the influence of sports betting on students' mental health, using Bindura University as a case study, and proposes a holistic intervention model to mitigate its negative consequences. The research adopts a qualitative approach, qualitative interviews to assess the widespread of sports betting, its psychological impacts, and the interventions by students. The findings reveal that a substantial number of students engage in sports betting as a perceived solution to financial hardships, peer pressure, and the allure of quick financial gains. However, this behaviour often leads to stress, anxiety, depression, and, in extreme cases, academic low grade due to low concentration in lectures and gambling addiction. The study identifies gaps in existing university policies, regulatory frameworks, and support systems that fail to adequately address this growing public health concern. In response, the study proposes legislative policy strengthening, University-based initiatives and parents/guardians engagement. By addressing the socio-economic, psychological, and regulatory dimensions of sports betting, this research contributes to the broader discourse on youth gambling addiction and mental health in Zimbabwean universities. The study recommends further research on the long-term efficacy of such interventions and calls for policymakers, educators, and mental health professionals to adopt proactive measures in safeguarding student well-being.
