- Abstract
- Gender based violence is a global problem that affects women and girls of all races, color and creed. This study explores the effectiveness of Zimbabwean laws and policies to fight against GBV. This study also locates gender based violence within the development agenda, explores related theories and points out how culture, patriarchy and tradition influences gender based violence perpetration and can also contribute to positive behavior change. The re search was based on Marxist feminism theory which evaluates gender relations within more fundamental structure of the capitalist class system. Women were viewed as men s property and they performed unpaid labor. Marxist feminism takes advantage of the fact that patriarchy exploits women, meaning that society are structured on men dominating and subjugating women on political, cultural, economic and social spheres. Focus groups discussions questionnaires and semi structured interviews are mixed methods of da ta collection methods that enable the researcher to acquire information directly from participants and ask follow up questions for clarification. The study also shows challenges faced by the government in implementing laws and policies related to addressing and preventing GBV. The research findings reflected that GBV is still a serious problem in Chitungwiza and it needs serious attention from government, agencies and the community as whole to eradicate GBV and promote equality. GBV policy makers should eva luate and review laws and policies for GBV reduction in order to make sure that they are comprehensive. Healthcare providers and residents should also work together to reduce GBV in the community through advocacy campaigns, support groups and workshops to support victims and provide them with education and raise awareness about GBV, its effects and available services for survivors.
