This study investigated the factors influencing students’ choice of physics at Ordinary Level in Muzarabani District, Zimbabwe, addressing the observed decline in enrolment noted by Chikodzi and Gukurume (2017). Grounded in Expectancy-Value Theory (Wigfield & Eccles, 2000), it employed a qualitative case study design, utilizing semi-structured interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, and document analysis. Data from 25 purposively sampled participants, including students, teachers, and parents, were analyzed thematically to explore curriculum design, teaching methodologies, socio-economic barriers, and cultural influences. Findings revealed that an abstract, urban-biased curriculum disconnected from rural contexts, coupled with outdated pedagogies, deterred engagement. Socio-economic constraints, such as unaffordable textbooks, and gender stereotypes further limited participation, particularly among girls. However, innovative teaching methods, like storytelling and low-cost experiments, and career aspirations enhanced motivation. Recommendations included revising the curriculum for local relevance, enhancing teacher training in active learning, providing affordable resources, and implementing career guidance to counter cultural biases. The study underscored the need for context-sensitive reforms to foster equitable STEM participation in rural settings, contributing to global discourse on science education and offering actionable insights for policymakers and educators in Muzarabani District.
