Abstract

This study investigates the impact of climate change on water quality in rural Bindura district, Zimbabwe. The research was motivated by the need to understand the effects of climate variability on water resources in rural communities, where access to clean water is already a challenge. The study employed a systematic approach, using questionnaires and observation guides to collect data from rural communities in Bindura district. The findings of the study reveal that high temperatures, changes in water levels, and lack of access to clean water are some of the significant impacts of climate change on water quality in rural Bindura district. The study also highlights the vulnerability of rural communities to climate change, who face significant challenges in accessing clean water for domestic use. However, the study also identifies adaptation strategies that can be employed to mitigate the impacts of climate change, including rainwater harvesting, dam construction, and the use of drought-tolerant crop varieties. The study also explores the role of indigenous knowledge systems in adapting to climate change, highlighting the importance of traditional knowledge and practices in enhancing community resilience. The findings of the study have significant implications for policy and practice, particularly in the areas of water resource management, climate change adaptation, and community development. The study concludes by making recommendations to residents, the educational sector, and NGOs on how to enhance community resilience to climate change. The study also identifies areas for further research, highlighting the need for continued investigation into the impacts of climate change on water quality and community livelihoods.
Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between climate change, water quality, and community livelihoods in rural Zimbabwe.
