Abstract

This study conducted a survey on indigenous veterinary medicine in the study areas of Kadoma and Chegutu, Zimbabwe. The study was aimed at documenting the use of indigenous veterinary medicine in Zimbabwe, particularly in Kadoma and Chegutu. The research objectives included identifying the commonly used indigenous veterinary medicine in Zimbabwe, evaluating the effectiveness and safety of indigenous remedies and exploring the potential of integrating ethno-veterinary medicine into conventional veterinary practices. The study site had a total of 165 participants which included farmers, extension workers, veterinary professionals, local community leaders and elders, farm workers and students studying programs related to animal health. Cluster sampling technique and some simple random sampling were applied to select the sample population of 50 participants respectively. Data was then collected from the participants using qualitative techniques. The collection was done through interviews and a focus group discussion (FGD). The results were then analysed using SPSS 21 with the aid of Excel. The results showed that there were quite a number of indigenous plants which farmers were using to improve their animal/livestock health and well-being. The study documented a total of above 32 indigenous plants which farmers were using. The study also noted that the farmers had developed vast experience in the utilisation of these indigenous remedies.
