- Abstract
- This study investigated the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning of Ordinary Level Chemistry at Chipadze High School in Bindura, Zimbabwe. Grounded in the interpretivist paradigm, the research employed a case study design using a predominantly qualitative approach supported by descriptive statistics. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with Chemistry teachers and structured questionnaires administered to Form 3 and Form 4 students. The study aimed to examine the types of educational technologies currently in use, identify the key barriers hindering effective ICT integration, and explore the perceived impact of technology on student engagement and learning outcomes. Findings revealed that ICT usage was limited and largely dependent on personal devices such as smartphones, with minimal access to specialized Chemistry software or institutional digital infrastructure. Significant challenges were identified, including inadequate resources, insufficient teacher training, unreliable electricity and internet access, and lack of institutional support. Despite these challenges, both teachers and students expressed positive perceptions of ICT’s potential to enhance conceptual understanding and student motivation when properly implemented. The study concludes that while policy support for ICT exists, effective integration remains constrained by contextual realities on the ground. It recommends targeted interventions including context-specific professional development, improved infrastructure, and policy alignment at the school level to bridge the gap between policy intentions and classroom practice.
