- Abstract
- A study on the assessment on combined science teachers' experience in conducting practical lessons at form three level was conducted at two selected secondary schools in Beitbridge district. The first objective was to assess the benefits experienced by combined science teachers in conducting practical lessons when teaching combined science. The second objective was to identify the challenges experienced by combined science teachers in conducting practical lessons when teaching combined science. The third objective sought to establish the possible solutions to challenges experienced by combined science teachers in conducting practical lessons when teaching combined science. The qualitative research design was conducted. The phenomena were studied from both the researcher's perspective and the interviewee's perspective through multiple sources of information that were gathered through interviews and observations. The study targeted form three combined science teachers, school heads and form three students. The research involved 46 participants, (40 learners, 4 teachers and 2 heads) from two selected secondary schools in Beitbridge district. From the selected sample schools, random sampling was used to select the respondents from form three students. The case study was conducted at two neighbouring secondary schools in the same district. During the research, the researcher respected the views and boundaries of the participants. The data collected from interviews was analysed, interpretively on the basis of conceptual framework. Data collected from interviews and observations was presented thematically. The research findings showed that there are several benefits experienced by combined science teachers in conducting practical lessons when teaching combined science, quite a number of challenges experienced by combined science teachers in conducting practical lessons when teaching combined science and also several possible solutions to challenges experienced by combined science teachers in conducting practical lessons when teaching combined science. Some of the recommendations included that, assessment of practical lessons should be given immediate attention and intensify mentoring it and series of workshops starting from school level upto district level should be done. Furthermore, general meetings with parents or guardians towards resource mobilisation should be done since they are the ones to fund the education of their children.
