- Abstract
- Despite the increasingly importance and utility of Mathematics in technology and society, the performance in the subject at Ordinary level has been very low. The study sought on investigating into errors made by learners in solving algebraic expressions a case of form three learners at Goteka secondary school which will lead to low performance in the subject area. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative analysis of student test scores and qualitative interviews with students. A sample of 32 form three learners was selected from Goteka secondary school where the research was carried out. Test and interviews were the research instruments. The test comprised of ten questions and the interview included open minded questions to enable learners to state their own opinions on what they think should be done to make Mathematics meaningful to them. The results revealed a number of factors on what errors learners made when solving algebraic expressions. Major findings of the study were that teachers should motivate learners to love Mathematics, use of different teaching methodologies especially those involves learner participation, to enhance learners interest in Mathematics. The use of modern technology is also crucial. These recommendations can be used to help all those who want to do further studies on this particular problem.
