- Abstract
- This study explored the perspectives of secondary school learners in Karoi District, Zimbabwe, regarding the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in chemistry education. Motivated by persistent barriers to ICT utilization in rural schools, the research aimed to examine learners’ experiences, perceived benefits, and the challenges they face in ICT-supported chemistry learning. A mixed-methods case study design was employed, combining questionnaires, focus group discussions, and academic record analysis. Data were collected from 30 learners enrolled in Forms 3 and 4 chemistry classes. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative responses were examined thematically. Findings revealed that learners viewed ICT as a powerful tool for enhancing understanding, motivation, and access to educational resources particularly through visual aids and online content. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited teacher support, policy restrictions on device use, and inconsistent access to relevant chemistry software were significant barriers. The study concludes that effective ICT integration in rural schools requires a learner-centred approach supported by adequate resources, teacher training, and infrastructure development. Recommendations include targeted investments in digital tools, inclusive school policies, and continuous capacity-building initiatives for teachers to enhance chemistry teaching through technology.
