Abstract

This study focused on explanation for low uptake of Ordinary Level Mathematics by a girl child in rural settings. The research approach and data analysis used were qualitative and thematic respectively. Participants were purposively selected from the two secondary schools coming with a sample of twenty Ordinary level girls and two Ordinary level Mathematics teachers. Data generating tools used were questionnaires and interview guides. Participants were influenced by their fear of Mathematics, gender stereotypes, inadequate resources and teacher-centred methods. Also lack of female role-models and support from parents and family members contributed. It was noted that there is need for gender sensitization, eradication of gender stereotypes to promote the creation of free teaching environment in the learning of Mathematics.
