- Abstract
- This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the extraction, characterization, and phytochemistry of Agave sisalana, commonly known as sisal. While sisal has been extensively utilized in the textile industry, limited research has been conducted on the extraction and phytochemical analysis of its secondary metabolites. This research aimed to explore the extraction methods, characterize the chemical composition, and investigate the phytochemical constituents of Agave sisalana. Analysis showed that A. sisalana contained many chemical solutes extracted with acetone using a Soxhlet machine. TLC showed that most of chemical components extracted from A. sisalana are difficult to identify with a mobile phases of ethanol and dichloromethane mixture. FT-IR results evaluated the multiple constituent functional groups of A. sisalana compounds. Other evidence was provided by chemical analysis showing the presence of components such as glycosides, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, oils and fats, and quinones and terpenoids. However, steroids have shown negative results. With the exception of tannins, which have an inhibitory effect on benign metabolites, which are proteins in nature.
