- Abstract
- The researcher conducted a study to examine Progressivism principles combined science teachers use in teaching form one in two selected schools in Hurungwe District as a case study. The study sought to establish the strategies that can be adopted to employ progressive principles in teaching Combined Science at school under investigation. This study was conducted in two secondary school in Hurungwe District. The study used a qualitative research methodology. The study sampled 10 teachers teaching combined science and 20 learners also doing combined science. Specifically it used in-depth structured interviews, observations and Questionnaires to gather data for both learners and teachers. The observations were made in combined science lessons to have first-hand information on how lessons were conducted. Data was analyzed using themes that originated from the gathered data. The study established that there was a lack of appropriate instructional materials, high teacher-pupil ratio, and congested timetable, lack of study time and proximity sub standardised labs in schools .The study recommend that school science laboratories should be sufficiently equipped with laboratory equipment to help accommodate all learners and have all learners in pragmatism. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should articulate a clear policy on inclusion and provide adequate financial support to all the schools to support learners and teachers.
