Abstract

This study explored the strategies employed in teaching Chemistry at the Ordinary Level, using one secondary school in Harare as a case study. The research aimed to assess the effectiveness of various instructional methods such as traditional lectures, group work, inquiry-based learning, and hands-on laboratory experiments in enhancing student understanding and performance. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative data from student questionnaires with qualitative insights from teacher interviews and classroom observations. Findings revealed that while traditional lectures remain dominant, interactive methods like group work and laboratory experiments significantly enhance learner engagement and comprehension. However, limited resources and large class sizes were identified as barriers to the effective implementation of these student-centered strategies. The study recommends increased investment in laboratory infrastructure, ongoing teacher training, and the integration of modern teaching aids to improve the quality of Chemistry education at the Ordinary Level.
