Abstract

This study was conducted to find out how Biology teachers integrate Information Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning activities. The plan for carrying out this study was motivated by various policies such as under the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s ICT Policy (2019–2023) and the National ICT Policy (2022–2027), which align with Vision 2030’s goal of fostering a knowledge-based economy and promote digital literacy to prepare students for a technology-driven world. However, teaching and learning of Biology requires much use of technology, the information regarding to teachers if they are using ICT in teaching and learning Biology is inadequate. This qualitative research study, therefore, explored how teachers integrate ICT in teaching and learning of Biology in selected secondary schools in Mhondoro-Ngezi district in Mashonaland West Province. Data were collected using interviews, classroom observations and documentary analysis. The findings from the study showed that teachers were willing to integrate ICT in teaching and learning Biology if there were adequate facilities, reliable infrastructures, and well trained in ICT integration. Teachers and students appreciated the importance of applying ICT in teaching and learning Biology. However, in order to benefit with ICT in teaching and learning Biology, they needed support so as to overcome the barriers which hinders ICT integration in Biology. Again, integration of ICT in teaching and learning Biology seemed to be critical issue to many teachers. This is due to the system of ICT training they have acquired in teachers’ colleges. Colleges train teachers ICT basics but not ICT as teaching and learning tool. As a result, teachers face challenges of applying it in classroom practices. This study recommended that further researches to be conducted in future for schools which have different characteristics to see if they have similar needs and challenges for ICT integration.
