- This research mitigates the misconceptions and errors at Ordinary Level, with a specific focus on students at a Rural Secondary School in Zimbabwe. A wide range of approaches and methods for data collection, which include pre-tests and post-tests to measure learning outcomes, together with questionnaires and focus group discussions for qualitative insights were employed. A sample of thirty (30) students and five (5) teachers was used. A detailed analysis of research was done on both the students' and teachers’ responses in the pre-test. Additionally, following taxonomy for misconceptions and errors in maths was used. The research proposed several strategies to mitigate these errors, such as the use of learner-centred approaches and the use of Conceptualised approach. Data presentation using tables, graphs and bar graphs to enhance clarity and visual comprehension of findings was used. Both descriptive statistics and qualitative techniques on data analysis revealed significant insights and patterns in learners' understanding. The results indicate that learners have different misconceptions and errors as noted in solving linear inequalities. The study concludes that cognitive Load is more effective in mitigating misconceptions and errors in solving linear inequalities. Taking a close snap on the research’s findings, the cognitive Load approach demonstrated potential in reducing errors and enhancing comprehension. Further studies are recommended to explore similar issues within other mathematical concepts, aiming to broaden the understanding of errors and improve educational strategies in mathematics education.
