Exploring the impact of global sourcing strategies on cost optimisation: a case of Schweppes Zimbabwe limited (2020 -2024)
-
Abstract
-
When local supply chains fail to deliver, smart companies look beyond borders. Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited, facing soaring production costs and unreliable local sourcing, turned to global strategies to survive and thrive. This research uncovers how global sourcing, when used strategically, helped the company cut costs, improve supply reliability, and navigate Zimbabwe’s turbulent economic climate. Drawing insights from 80 employees in procurement, finance, and logistics, the study highlights the real- world impact of outsourcing, direct imports, and supplier partnerships. Results show significant cost savings especially in raw materials and logistics despite ongoing challenges like currency shortages, customs delays, and supplier risks. Yet, cost optimization is not automatic. Success depends on smart tactics: long-term contracts, supplier performance tracking, and digital procurement tools. The findings suggest that while Schweppes has made progress, deeper value lies ahead if backed by better coordination, technology investment, and stronger supplier relationships.
