- Abstract
- The study was designed to investigate the effective use of group work method in the teaching and learning of Mathematics at Form Two level. The study also investigated the perception on the use of group work method, the merits and demerits of group work method and some strategies to improve the effective use of the group work method. The research paradigm used was informed by the theory of constructivism. The theory suggests that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their experience. Methodology Descriptive survey method was used in this study as a research design. This design provides the extension of the general overview of the effective use of the group work method to the development of further insights and more precise research. I used twenty learners for my sample research. The sample size of teachers who were interviewed was six chosen equally from the selected schools. Random sampling technique was used. The data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The data from the questionnaires and interviews was analyzed and presented. The data from the study was tabulated. The study reveals that both teachers and learners have positive perceptions towards the group work method. However, some teachers have negative perceptions on the use of the group work method. The findings of the study also revealed that the group work method can be utilized effectively in teaching and learning as it improves pupils' performance. It also revealed that the group method increases teacher-pupil interaction and enhances critical thinking in pupils. The study recommends that Mathematics teachers should make effective use of the group method in the teaching and learning of Mathematics at Form 2 level. Teachers should also monitor pupils so that they could easily identify where there are some group problems and assist in solving problems. The research would conclude that the use of Group work Method was very effective in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. Lastly, the study recommends other researchers in the same field of study to take a larger sample than the researcher did. For further research, the study recommends that there is need to include other secondary schools so that the research depicts a national outlook on the effective use of the group method. This may perhaps bring much more realistic views on the actual attitude of pupils and teachers towards the effective use of the group method in the teaching and learning of Mathematics.
