- Abstract
- The main objective of this qualitative research study was to investigate the challenges faced by primary school teachers in teaching chemistry concepts under STEM education within the Heritage-Based Curriculum. A qualitative research approach using an interpretative research paradigm was employed to collect data through in-depth interviews with 5 primary school teachers and observations of their teaching practices. Additionally, interviews were conducted with 10 students to gather their perspectives on the challenges they face in learning chemistry concepts. The major findings of the study revealed that primary school teachers face numerous challenges in teaching chemistry concepts under STEM education, including lack of resources, inadequate teacher training, and insufficient curriculum support. The study also found that students struggle to understand complex chemistry concepts due to inadequate teaching methods and resources. Furthermore, the study revealed that the Heritage-Based Curriculum presents additional challenges for teachers, as it requires them to integrate cultural heritage into their teaching practices. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the government and educational authorities provide primary school teachers with adequate resources, training, and curriculum support to teach chemistry concepts effectively. Additionally, the study recommends that teachers be encouraged to use innovative and interactive teaching methods to engage students and promote deeper understanding of chemistry concepts. Finally, the study recommends that the Heritage-Based Curriculum be reviewed and revised to ensure that it is aligned with the needs of primary school teachers and students.
