Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of micro science kits to biology students with reference to Mugabe Secondary School in Uzumba district: a case Of Mugabe Secondary School, Murehwa, Zimbabwe. The objectives of the study were to compare the overall practical skills acquisition of Biology students at Mugabe Secondary School taught practical work using micro science kits with those taught without using the micro science kits, to determine whether Micro Science kits are of any significance in the skills acquisition process of Biology students taught practical work using micro science kits with those taught without using them, to identify challenges faced on the use of micro science kits at secondary school level and to recommend the solution to enhance the performance of Biology students at Mugabe School. The researcher used a qualitative approach. A qualitative case study design was used. From a population of 45 O-Level Biology students and 8 teachers a sample size of 20 respondents was selected. To obtain data the researcher used interviews for teachers and administrators and observation for students. Data collected was analysed using descriptive method to report commonly held view. Qualitative data was analysed using document analysis. The researcher found out that the majority of teachers who participated in this study believed that micro science kits were useful in skill acquisition of students as this can aid the practical aspect which is essential to this subject and in the long run the performance of the Biology students and any other Science subjects can be positively enhanced. Since the school does not have a proper laboratory the kits are essential. The researcher recommends that the school should focus on seeking alternative funds to ensure the availability of the micro science kits to enhance teaching and learning of Biology. If the kits are sourced there can be a positive change in the performance of students at O level.
