This study investigated the challenges faced by O’ Level students in learning the mensuration of solid shapes, with particular focus on misconceptions, reasoning difficulties, and the need for effective teaching strategies. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative data from questionnaires administered to 30 Form 4 students with qualitative insights from interviews with four mathematics teachers, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings revealed that 60% of students confused volume and surface area formulas, 53% misapplied slant height, and many used two-dimensional formulas in three-dimensional contexts. Spatial reasoning skills were generally weak, with learners showing low confidence in mentally visualising and manipulating 3D objects. Classroom observations indicated that teaching strategies were predominantly teacher-centred, with minimal use of visual aids, manipulatives, or technology. Teachers recognised the potential benefits of digital tools but faced barriers such as limited access, lack of training, and time constraints. The study concludes that persistent misconceptions, underdeveloped spatial reasoning, and limited instructional resources hinder students’ mastery of mensuration of solid shapes. The study recommends adopting more learner-centred and visual approaches, integrating appropriate technology, and providing targeted professional development for teachers. These measures could enhance conceptual understanding, improve student performance, and make the learning of mensuration more engaging and effective.
