- Evaluating the effectiveness of debt management strategies: a case study of Zesa holdings
- Abstract
- This research analyses the efficacy of debt management strategies adopted by the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) Holdings, the leading electricity service provider in Zimbabwe that plays a significant role in the socio-economic development of the country. The proposed study responds to this urgent problem of increasing debt and debt levels which have impacted negatively on ZESA’s business. Using a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative survey and qualitative interviews, this research will seek to measure current levels of debt management, determine strengths and weaknesses, and discover stakeholder’s perceptions of the same. The results highlight that ZESA has adopted various options including debt rescheduling and payment plans, continual auditing, among others, to deal with its financial liabilities. At the same time, the study also highlights the serious difficulties facing them, including limits in resources, external economic environment, and the lack of understanding on certain debt management practices among the partners. These difficulties have been demonstrated to limit the efficacy of current approaches. The research underscores the importance of sound debt management for not only the operational sustainability of ZESA but also the need to provide reliable electricity supply which is crucial for Zimbabwe’s overall economic stability. Recommendations, derived from the findings of this study, have been suggested to improve ZESA’s debt management system. These suggestions are intended to enhance communication, stakeholder engagement, and utilization of financial-management best practices. Finally, this thesis provides insights towards how ZESA can address its financial crisis while at the same time promoting a sustainable energy supply for the country.
