Abstract

The researcher conducted a study to assess the causes of high failure rate in Mathematics among grade seven learners in Seke Rural District Mashonaland East Province. The study sought to establish the strategies that can be adopted to improve the pass rate of grade seven mathematics in the district under investigation. In this study, a sample of 36 grade seven teachers, were purposively sampled from three schools in Seke Rural District. The study's goal was to determine the factors that contribute to the low pass rate in mathematics at the Grade Seven level in Seke Rural District. The study was of significance due to the observed trend of low pass rates in mathematics from 2019 to 2023. The study employed a qualitative research design to generate data in detail, using techniques such as document analysis, observation guides, and interviews.
According to the study's findings, teachers were qualified and experienced to instruct seventh-grade pupils; therefore, their credentials and experience did not contribute to the low maths pass rate. However, the main causes of the poor maths pass rate at the seventh grade level include teacher-centred approaches, students' unfavourable attitudes about the subject, and insufficient teaching and learning resources in schools. The researcher suggests that frequent in-service training and refresher courses in mathematics instruction be mandated by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. Fundraising initiatives should be organized by the school development committees in order to purchase instructional resources for classrooms.
When teaching mathematics, educators should employ learner-centred approaches. It is the responsibility of school administrators to oversee and mentor maths teachers.
