- Abstract
- This study is to investigate factors affecting student performance in Harare Northern District. The study found that contextual factors such as teacher and learner-related factors such as lack of exposure to English, poor English Language proficiency, the use of English medium of instruction and the use of local language in English classes, home-based factors such as parental involvement, family level of education and family income, and school-based factors such a lack of physical resources and instructional materials had negative impact on form 4 learners’ learning outcomes in English Language form 4. The findings showed that most teachers and learners doing English Language, lacked English Language proficiency due to lack of adequate exposure to English. The research findings also showed that inadequacy of infrastructure such as libraries, language laboratories and study-halls were matters of serious concern. Inadequacy of such facilities negatively impacted upon influenced learners’ academic performance. It can also be concluded that physical resources were not enough in most of the secondary schools since an overwhelming number of respondents claimed unavailability of physical facilities in schools. This affected the academic performance of the learners negatively since they did not get a comfortable environment in which to study.
