- Abstract
- This study explored the opportunities and challenges of using ICT in enhancing conceptual understanding of Quadratic Equations at Ordinary Level. The study was carried at Batanai High School under Rujeko Cluster of Mazowe District. This study investigated the effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching quadratic equations to secondary mathematics. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating both quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive analysis. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-tests administered to students to measure their understanding and performance in quadratic equations before and after the integration of ICT tools. The tools included software such as Geogebra, interactive whiteboards, and educational apps designed to facilitate the learning of quadratic equations. The quantitative analysis focused on comparing test scores to determine the impact of ICT on students’ academic performance. Qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with students and teachers. These interviews explored participants’ experiences, perceptions, and attitudes towards the use of ICT in mathematics instruction. The qualitative analysis aimed to identify themes related to student engagement, motivation, and the perceived opportunities and challenges in using ICT in the classroom. Findings indicated that the use of ICT in teaching quadratic equations significantly enhanced student engagement and motivation. Students reported a better understanding of complex concepts and a more interactive and enjoyable learning experience. Teachers also noted improvements in students’ problem-solving skills and overall performance. However, the study also highlighted several challenges, including limited access to technology, insufficient training for teachers, and the need for on-going technical support. The study concluded with recommendations for educational policy and practice. It advocates for increased investment in ICT resources and infrastructure, as well as comprehensive professional development programs for teachers to effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices. These recommendations aimed to optimize the benefits of ICT in mathematics education and contribute to the overall improvement of educational outcomes in Zimbabwe. A mixed-methods approach was employed in the study, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods. The study sampled 50 Form 3 students, divided into two groups: an ICT-based instruction group and a traditional instruction group. The results showed a significant improvement in students' understanding and retention of quadratic equation concepts in the ICT-based instruction group compared to the traditional instruction group. Furthermore, the study revealed that ICT-based instruction enhanced student engagement, motivation, and collaboration. The findings of this study provide insights into the potential benefits of ICT integration in mathematics education in Zimbabwean secondary schools, and highlight the need for teacher training and infrastructure development to support effective ICT-based instruction.
