- Abstract
- The study titled “An assessment on management of mixed ability classes in teaching and learning of Physics at ordinary level” examines the impact of mixed ability classes in two Murewa district Secondary schools. It aims to assess how these methods affect student engagement and learning outcomes in Physics. Through a qualitative multi case study, incorporating interviews, observations and focus group discussions. The research offers insight into the experiences of students and educators with mixed ability classes. The thematic analysis of data reviews that mixed ability learning promotes critical thinking. Despite the benefits, the study identifies challenges such as insufficient teacher training and resistance to new teaching methods. To overcome this, it recommends development of interactive content, and community engagement. These strategies aims to create an inclusive and effective learning environment. Literature reviewed showed that the management styles and teaching strategies and teaching qualification are the key to success of pupils in the teaching and learning process. Kuoni’s theory of pro-active behavior and Ganot’s congruent communication were used. Leadership styles such as democratic, autocratic and laissez-faire styles were used as theoretical framework to interpret the case study on how teachers manage mixed ability classes. The researcher discovered that the success of mixed ability classes is a task for the teachers and management styles and teaching strategies influence the performance of pupils in classes.
