- Abstract
- This study assesses the effectiveness of survivor support services for survivors of gender based violence in Nemamwa, a rural district in Masvingo Province in Zimbabwe. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. Data was collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews with key stakeholders and community members. Findings indicate significant gaps in the provision of comprehensive care for the survivors including limited access to income generating projects, lack of awareness, stigma and unequal prioritization of service provision. It also highlighted the need for adequate follow ups on referrals among service providers especially the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Victim Friendly Unit to ensure a comprehensive response to survivor’s wellbeing. To address these issues, the study proposed stakeholders work together to promote income generating projects that are targeted at financial independence and economic empowerment of the marginalized people in the community, raise awareness and education, visible, exemplary detention and arrest of those who exacerbate practices of gender based violence in the name of cultural norms and beliefs. There is also a great need for more effective coordination and collaboration among service providers to address the root of the cause of gender based violence. These recommendations aimed at contributing to the development of more effective strategies for supporting gender based violence survivors and promoting their recovery and well-being.
