- Abstract
- The study examines the effective strategies for enhancing road safety and mitigating road traffic accidents in Harare Metropolitan which is Zimbabwe’s rapidly urbanizing capital. Framed within pragmatism theory, the research prioritizes practical context specific solutions over rigid methodologies focusing on identifying actionable interventions that yield tangible safety improvements within Harare’s socio-infrastructural environment. Utilizing a mixed methods approach including accident data analysis, key informant interviews, questionnaires and direct observations, the investigation sought understand the interplay between driver behavior, vehicle conditions, poor road infrastructure, enforcement challenges and urban v planning factors contributing to accidents. The target population encompasses key stakeholders directly affected or involved in Harare’s road safety ecosystem and these include traffic police officers, public transport drivers (kombi drivers), licensed private motorists and pedestrians. By engaging this diverse population, the study aims to develop evidence based sustainable and pragmatic strategies to address the root causes of accidents and are practical for implementation by relevant authorities and adoption by road users, ultimately contributing to a safer urban transport network.
