- Abstract
- The study was on the assessment of the effects of subsidies on wheat. A case study of Kwekwe district, Dunlop extension ward 5. The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of subsidies on farmer's income, to determine the effect of subsidies on wheat market and to evaluate constraints faced by wheat farmers. A random sample of 50 farmers were contacted so as to gather information on the effects of subsidies on wheat. The researcher used structured questioner to gather information of the study. To find out the effects of subsidies on farmer's income, regression analysis was used, to determine the effect of subsidies on market, time series was used and to evaluate constraints faced by wheat farmers, Likert scale was used. It is with evidence from the results, that wheat output has got significant level of 0,05 and p value of 0,031 which signifies that there is direct proportion between income and wheat output. On the effects of subsidies on market, it shows that an increase in subsidy amount cause an increase in wheat output. Price rises from 400 USD to 650 USD from the year 2022 to 2023. This agrees the law of supply which says producers supply more at higher price. In this case, price increase was due to the government regulation which increases prices for wheat produce to motivate farmers to grow. The major constraint faced by farmers was delay on payment as 28 out of 50 farmers strongly agree that delay on payment was affecting their production.
