- Abstract
- This dissertation examines the relationship between environmental degradation and peace and security in Chimanimani, Zimbabwe, from 2019 to 2023. Using qualitative data, this study investigates how environmental degradation affects social, economic, and political stability in the region. The research also assesses the role played by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) in mitigating the effects of environmental degradation on peace and security. The research reveals that environmental degradation has significantly contributed to resource competition, displacement, and social unrest, ultimately threatening peace and security in Chimanimani. The study also shows that EMA's efforts, including environmental monitoring, policy development, and community engagement, have helped to reduce the impacts of environmental degradation on peace and security. The study recommends enhanced collaboration between EMA, local communities, and other stakeholders to address environmental degradation and promote sustainable development, peace, and security in Chimanimani. The research contributes to the understanding of the complex relationships between environmental degradation, peace, and security, providing valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars working towards sustainable development and peace building in fragile environments. The study highlights the need for sustainable environmental management practices, effective governance, and community engagement to mitigate the impacts of environmental degradation on peace and security. This research contributes to the understanding of the complex relationships between environmental degradation, peace, and security, providing valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars working towards sustainable development and peace building in fragile environments.
